Taste. Convenience. Freedom.

The Basics Part 6 – Fermentation

Fermentation is a way to make food stay fresh longer, improve it’s nutrition profile and (most importantly) make it taste amazing! After all, we love our coffee, chocolate, cheese, and beer – no matter where in the world we live.

Fermentation lets us save energy and make the most of our produce. It’s an important part of any off-grid cooking repertoire.

Fermented foods in our everyday lives

Fermented foods are so ubiquitous we tend to take them for granted. Here are some of the most common ones.

Interesting topic! From the foods you mentioned I’ve never even heard about Kefir, Natto or Kombucha, what are they? I’m really curious about it, especially Kombucha, it has a funny name! Also, are fermented foods and drinks better or worse for our health compared to non fermented? Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks for your comment, Afonso!

Kefir and kombucha are fermented drinks. Kefir is a bit like effervescent drinking yogurt. It’s popular in eastern Europe and Russia. Kombucha is a fermented tea that originated in China but is becoming more popular in Europe and North America as a healthier alternative to soda.

Certain fermented foods drinks contain live probiotics (tiny microorganisms that are good for our body) and are needed as part of a healthy diet. These include yogurt, kefir, kombucha, natto and kimchi. Other fermented foods are healthy in moderate amounts, because they contain important nutrients that aren’t in non-fermented foods (eg. the healthy stuff in red wine).

I hope to write more about the different types of fermented foods soon.
